MD5 Hash Generator

MD5 hash generator is a tool that computes and produces a unique fixed-length string of characters from input data.

What is an MD5 hash generator?

An MD5 hash generator turns any text into a fixed-length string of 32 hexadecimal characters, called an MD5 hash or checksum. The same input always gives the same hash, and even a tiny change in the input gives a completely different one. MD5 stands for Message-Digest Algorithm 5, and it produces a 128-bit value.

How to use the MD5 hash generator

  1. Type or paste your text into the box above.
  2. Click Generate.
  3. Copy the 32-character hash from the result.

MD5 examples

Here are a few inputs and their MD5 hashes. Note that capital letters matter: “hello” and “Hello” give different hashes.

What is MD5 used for?

  • Checking that a file or text has not been changed by accident, for example after a download or a copy
  • Creating quick fingerprints to find duplicate files or records
  • Working with older systems and APIs that still expect an MD5 value

When you should not use MD5

MD5 is no longer considered secure. Researchers have shown that two different inputs can be made to produce the same MD5 hash (a collision), so it should not be used for digital signatures, certificates or any case where someone might try to forge data. It is also a poor choice for storing passwords, because MD5 is very fast and common hashes can be looked up in tables. For passwords, use a password hashing algorithm such as bcrypt or Argon2. For general integrity checks where security matters, use SHA-256 or stronger.

MD5 hash generator FAQs

How long is an MD5 hash?

Always 32 hexadecimal characters (128 bits), no matter how short or long the input is.

Can an MD5 hash be decrypted?

No. MD5 is a one-way hash, not encryption, so there is nothing to decrypt. Simple or common inputs can still be guessed by hashing many candidates and comparing the results, which is why MD5 is a weak choice for passwords.

Why does my MD5 hash differ from another tool?

The usual cause is a difference in the input: an extra space, a trailing new line, different capital letters or a different character encoding. Even one extra character changes the whole hash.

Is MD5 safe to use?

It is fine for non-security tasks such as spotting accidental changes or duplicates. It is not safe for passwords, signatures or anything an attacker could target. Use SHA-256 or a password hashing algorithm instead.

Can I get the MD5 checksum of a file?

This tool hashes text. To check a file, you can use your system’s command line:

  • Windows: certutil -hashfile yourfile.ext MD5
  • Linux: md5sum yourfile.ext
  • macOS: md5 yourfile.ext

What is the difference between MD5 and SHA-256?

SHA-256 produces a longer, 256-bit hash and is still considered secure, while MD5 produces a 128-bit hash and has known weaknesses. SHA-256 is the better choice for security-related work.
