OpenAI launches new AI model OpenAI o1 aka Strawberry

OpenAI has released its new AI Model “o1” also known as “Strawberry,” which can solve difficult problems in areas such as science, coding, and math. The models are now available in ChatGPT and the API as part of an early preview, with regular updates and improvements expected.

For OpenAI, o1 represents a step toward its broader goal of human-like artificial intelligence. More practically, it does a better job at writing code and solving multistep problems than previous models.

How it works

The o1 series models are trained to spend more time thinking before responding, refining their reasoning process, and improving problem-solving capabilities.  In preliminary tests, the next update of the reasoning model performed equally well with PhD students on physics, chemistry, and biology tasks, and won significantly in mathematics and coding competitions.

Despite its advanced reasoning capabilities, the o1-preview model lacks some practical features found in GPT-4o, such as web browsing and file uploading. However, OpenAI emphasizes the model’s ability to handle complex tasks, especially in areas that require multi-step workflows.

Safety

OpenAI has implemented a new safety training approach that allows models to better follow security rules. During the qualifying exam for the International Mathematics Olympiad, the o1 model scored 83 percent, a huge improvement over GPT-4o’s 13 percent. OpenAI has also strengthened its security efforts by partnering with AI security organizations in the U.S. and the U.K.

OpenAI o1-mini

Along with o1-preview, OpenAI has released a small, cost-effective model called o1-mini, designed specifically for developers who need advanced coding skills without worldwide knowledge. o1-mini is 80% cheaper than o1-preview.

As a smaller model, o1-mini is 80% cheaper than o1-preview, making it a powerful, cost-effective model for applications that require reasoning but not extensive global knowledge.

How to use OpenAI o1

Starting today, ChatGPT Plus and Team users can manually select o1-preview and o1-mini from the model picker, with a rate limit of 30 messages for o1-preview and 50 for o1-mini. API users in the highest usage tier can also start prototyping, although some features such as function calling and streaming are not yet available.

This is an early preview of these reasoning models in ChatGPT and the API. OpenAI plans to expand access to o1-mini for ChatGPT free users and will continue to add new features to the o1 series, including browsing, file and image uploading, and other features to make them more useful to everyone.
