The Gemini app is free to start, but Google also sells paid plans called Google AI Plus, Google AI Pro and Google AI Ultra. Google changed how limits work in May 2026, and prices changed again over the summer, so older comparisons are out of date. This guide explains what each plan gives you and how to decide.
Quick answer
- Free: enough for everyday questions, writing help and learning.
- Google AI Plus: twice the free usage limit, for people who often hit the free limit.
- Google AI Pro: four times the free limit, for daily heavy use and Google app features.
- Google AI Ultra: five or twenty times the Pro limit, for power users who reach Pro’s ceiling most weeks.
Plans and prices at a glance (US)
| Plan | US price per month | Usage compared with free | Storage |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | Standard limits | 15 GB (the normal free Google account storage) |
| Google AI Plus | $4.99 | 2x | 400 GB |
| Google AI Pro | $19.99 | 4x | 5 TB |
| Google AI Ultra (5x) | $99.99 | 5x the Pro limit | 20 TB or more |
| Google AI Ultra (20x) | $199.99 | 20x the Pro limit | 20 TB or more |
Prices and storage come from recent price guides, not from Google’s own pages, and they change often. AI Plus was reported to drop from $7.99 to $4.99 on June 8, 2026, and the old single Ultra plan was reported to split into two tiers at Google I/O 2026. Prices in India and other countries are different, so check the plan page in your Google account before you pay. The usage multipliers come from Google’s own help page.
How Gemini usage limits work now
From May 17, 2026, Google moved Gemini Apps to compute-based limits. This means:
- There is no fixed number of prompts per day that Google publishes.
- Your usage refreshes every 5 hours, until you reach a weekly limit.
- How fast you use your limit depends on the complexity of your prompt, the features you use and the length of your chat.
- Premium features use more of your limit. These include creating images, videos and music, Deep Research, the Pro model, and extended thinking or Deep Think.
Google states the multipliers like this: AI Plus gives 2x the standard limit, AI Pro gives 4x, and AI Ultra gives 5x or 20x the AI Pro limit, depending on the subscription. Google also warns that limits may change, and that if capacity is short, users without a plan may be limited before paid users. The changes described here apply to users aged 18 and over.
Which plan should you choose?
Stay on Free if
- You use Gemini for occasional questions, summaries or writing help
- You rarely see a message that you have reached your limit
Pick Google AI Plus if
- You often reach the free limit, but do not need heavy daily use
- You want more storage at a low price
Google AI Pro makes sense if
- You use Gemini every day for work, study or research
- You use features such as Deep Research or image and video creation often
- You want the extra Google storage and Google app features
Consider Google AI Ultra if
- You reach Pro’s limit most weeks
- You need the highest limits or the most advanced reasoning and agent features
If you are not sure, start with the free version and note how often you hit the limit. Upgrade only when it keeps getting in your way.
How to make your limit last longer
- Use simple prompts for simple tasks, and save Deep Research and media creation for when you need them.
- Start a new chat for a new topic. Long chats use more of your limit.
- Be specific in your first prompt, so you need fewer follow-ups.
- Check the current limit message in the app, which tells you when your limit refreshes.
Who can use Google AI plans?
Google says that to use Gemini Apps with a Google AI plan in most countries, you must be 13 or older, or the minimum age in your country. In the European Economic Area, Switzerland and the United Kingdom, you must be 18 or older. Google AI Pro and Ultra are available in more than 150 countries and territories, and Google AI Plus is available in a smaller list of countries. Work and school accounts follow different rules.
How to upgrade, change or cancel
Google says you can subscribe, upgrade, change or cancel your Google AI plan at any time, from the Gemini app settings or your Google account. Check what is included before you cancel, because storage and features change with the plan.
FAQs
Is Gemini free to use?
Yes. The Gemini app is free, with standard usage limits. Paid plans raise the limits and add features and storage.
Is there a daily prompt limit on Gemini?
Google no longer publishes a fixed number of prompts. Limits are compute-based, refresh every 5 hours, and have a weekly cap.
Is Google AI Pro worth $19.99 a month?
It makes sense if you use Gemini daily, and often hit the free limit or use heavier features. If you rarely reach the free limit, you probably do not need it.
Are Gemini prices the same in India and the US?
No. The US prices in this guide are in dollars. Prices in India and other countries are set in local currency, so check your Google account for the current price.
Do paid plans change my privacy settings?
No. Your chat history and activity settings work the same way. See our guide to turning off Gemini Keep Activity and deleting your chats.
Prices, plan names and limits change often. This guide reflects Google’s help pages and published reports as of October 2026.
