WhatsApp to support messages from other apps soon

Meta, the parent company of WhatsApp and Messenger, has announced a big change that could transform how we use these popular messaging apps. Soon, users in the European Union will be able to integrate chats from third-party apps like iMessage, Telegram, Google Messages, and Signal directly into WhatsApp and Messenger. This exciting new feature promises to make your messaging experience more seamless and interconnected than ever before!

Bringing All Your Chats Together in One Place – WhatsApp

Meta’s plan will let you choose whether to merge chats from WhatsApp and Messenger with third-party app conversations into a single inbox or keep them separate, depending on your preference. The idea is to create a more unified experience, where you no longer need to juggle between multiple apps to keep up with different conversations. You’ll get to decide how you want to manage your messages, making it easier to stay on top of your chats.

Enhanced Notifications and Messaging Features

Meta is not stopping at just merging messages; it’s going a step further to enrich the overall user experience. New notifications will soon pop up in WhatsApp and Messenger to let you know when you can link chats from newly supported apps. This means you won’t miss out on the opportunity to integrate your favorite messaging services when they become available.

But that’s not all—Meta promises to go beyond basic messaging features. You can look forward to rich features like reactions, direct replies, typing indicators, and read receipts. These enhancements ensure that the messaging experience will feel natural and familiar, even when you’re chatting across different platforms.

Group Chats and Third-Party Voice and Video Calls

Starting next year, Meta will introduce the ability to create group chats that include people from third-party apps. Imagine being able to coordinate plans with friends, family, or colleagues all within one group, regardless of the app they’re using. This move could redefine how we think about group messaging, making it more inclusive and flexible.

Even more exciting, Meta has plans to support third-party voice and video calls by 2027. This means that you won’t be limited to just text—soon, you’ll be able to make calls between WhatsApp, Messenger, and other supported apps, all within a single interface. It’s a glimpse into the future of truly interoperable communication!

Why is Meta Making These Changes?

These changes are not just about making your life easier; they’re also about compliance. Meta has been working on this integration because it is considered a “digital gatekeeper” under the EU’s Digital Markets Act. This law requires major tech companies to ensure their messaging apps can work with third-party services, opening up a world of possibilities for more connected and accessible communication.

Ensuring Privacy with the Signal Protocol – WhatsApp

One key challenge Meta faces is maintaining the security and privacy of your messages across different apps. To address this, third-party apps that want to connect with WhatsApp and Messenger must use the same Signal Protocol, the technology that powers end-to-end encryption in WhatsApp. Meta has committed to making the Signal Protocol available to its partners, ensuring that privacy remains a top priority even as the messaging landscape becomes more interconnected.

What Does This Mean for You?

These upcoming changes mean more convenience, more choices, and a more enriched messaging experience for users in the EU. Whether you’re chatting with friends on WhatsApp, catching up with family on Messenger, or coordinating with colleagues on another app, soon it will all be in one place. You’ll have greater control over how you connect, communicate, and stay in touch—all without sacrificing the privacy and features you love.
