It happens to many people: a salary arrives late, an auto-debit fails, or an EMI slips your mind. A single missed payment can feel minor, but lenders report your repayment behaviour to credit bureaus, and that record decides how easily you can borrow later. This guide explains what happens after a missed EMI and what you can do about it.

Quick answer

  • Yes, a missed or late EMI can lower your credit score. Payment history is one of the most important factors in how the score is calculated.
  • The damage depends on how late you are, how often it happens, and your earlier record. CIBIL does not publish an exact number of points lost.
  • Lenders and bureaus commonly state that a late payment record can stay on your credit report for up to seven years.
  • Acting quickly helps. Pay the overdue amount as soon as you can and speak to your lender.

What counts as a missed or late EMI?

An EMI is late when it is not paid by its due date. Credit reports record how many days past due (DPD) a payment was, usually in steps such as 30, 60 and 90 days. Lenders follow their own policies on when they report a delay, so even a short delay can show up in some cases. The longer the delay, the heavier the mark.

How lateWhat it usually means
A few daysLate fee or penal charges; it may or may not be reported, depending on the lender
About 30 daysCommonly reported as an overdue payment (DPD 30)
About 60 daysA clearer sign of repayment trouble; the score impact grows
More than 90 daysLenders generally classify the loan as a non-performing asset (NPA), which is a serious mark and can lead to recovery action

How does a missed EMI affect your score?

Your credit score is a three-digit number, usually between 300 and 900 for CIBIL, that summarises how reliably you repay. A missed EMI can hurt it in these ways:

  • The delay is recorded. It appears in your payment history on the credit report.
  • The score can drop. Lender blogs often mention drops of tens of points, but the real effect varies from person to person. Someone with a thin or low-scoring history is usually hit harder than someone with a long clean record.
  • Repeated delays count more. One slip is not the same as a pattern.
  • Later applications suffer. Lenders may reject your next loan, offer a smaller amount, or charge a higher interest rate.

How quickly does it show up?

Lenders report to credit bureaus regularly, and RBI has been shortening the time between reports in recent years. In practice, a missed EMI can appear on your report within days or weeks rather than months. The same faster reporting means that paying on time will also be reflected sooner.

How long does it stay on your report?

A late payment record can stay on your credit report for up to about seven years from the date of the delay. Its effect on your score fades over time as you build a fresh record of on-time payments. A late payment can be removed only if it was reported by mistake.

What else happens when you miss an EMI?

  • A late fee or penal interest, as set out in your loan agreement
  • Reminder calls and messages, and later recovery action if the delay continues
  • Difficulty getting new loans or credit cards
  • A higher interest rate when you do get approved

Short-term loans follow the same rules. If you are thinking of borrowing for a few weeks, read our guide to payday loans in India so you know what happens if you cannot repay.

What to do right after you miss an EMI

  1. Pay the overdue amount as soon as possible. The sooner you pay, the less severe the record.
  2. Call or write to your lender. Explain the reason, and ask whether the late fee can be waived or reduced.
  3. Set up auto-debit. Keep enough balance in your account a day or two before the due date.
  4. Ask about restructuring if you are in real difficulty. Some lenders offer a revised schedule. This is better than ignoring the problem.
  5. Avoid borrowing from another app to repay. New loans add new deadlines and credit enquiries. If you must borrow, compare personal loans and payday loans first, and check that the app is RBI-registered.
  6. Keep records. Save payment receipts and messages with the lender.

How to check your credit report

India has four RBI-regulated credit bureaus: TransUnion CIBIL, Experian, Equifax and CRIF High Mark. Under RBI rules, you can get one free full credit report from each bureau every calendar year. Checking your own score is treated as a soft enquiry and does not lower it.

When you read the report, look at the payment history section and the DPD entries for each loan. If something is wrong, such as a payment you made on time that shows as late, or a loan that is not yours, raise a dispute with both the lender and the bureau. RBI rules set a time limit for resolving such complaints, generally 30 days, with compensation if the delay is the lender’s or the bureau’s fault.

FAQs

Does one missed EMI hurt my credit score?

It can. The impact depends on how late the payment was and on your earlier record. A short delay with an otherwise clean history usually does less damage than repeated or long delays.

Can a late payment be removed from my credit report?

Only if it was reported incorrectly. Otherwise it stays on your report and loses weight as time passes and you keep paying on time.

How long does it take to recover my score?

There is no fixed time. Paying every EMI and bill on time, keeping your credit card use low and avoiding unnecessary new loans gradually rebuilds your score over months.

Does paying the late fee clear the record?

No. The late fee is a charge from the lender. The record of the delay remains on your credit report.

Will checking my own credit score lower it?

No. Checking your own score is a soft enquiry. Applying for new loans or cards creates hard enquiries, which can lower it a little.

This article is for general information and is not financial advice. Policies differ between lenders, so check your loan agreement and speak to your lender about your situation.
